BMI calculator

BMI is a rough adult screening measure. It is not a diagnosis and does not describe body composition.

Formula and adult reference ranges

BMI equals body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For example, 75 kg at 1.75 m gives a BMI of 24.5.

Common adult reference categories use below 18.5, 18.5 to 24.9, 25 to 29.9 and 30 or above. These categories are population-level orientation, not a personal health verdict.

What BMI cannot show

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and does not reflect fat distribution, fitness, age, pregnancy or individual body proportions.

A value outside the reference range deserves context, especially if it concerns you or accompanies symptoms.

When the calculator is not suitable

Adult BMI categories are not suitable for children and teenagers, who require age- and sex-specific growth references.

Pregnancy, pronounced muscle mass and major medical changes also make isolated interpretation less useful.

Frequently asked questions

What BMI is considered within the usual adult range?

18.5 to 24.9 is commonly used as an adult reference range, but it does not define individual health.

Is BMI useful for muscular people?

Only to a limited extent, because additional muscle can raise body weight without the same meaning as additional body fat.

Does the calculator work for children?

No. Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific growth charts.
